World Cup 98 was an international football tournament held in Tikariot, The Kytler Peninsulae, Qusmo, and Yuezhou (collectively billed as Xandrian Sea after the body of water that these nations surround). It was the first World Cup to use the new KPB+ rankings formula, marking the change from the previous KPB ranking system. Flavovespia won their first World Cup title, defeating Crpostran 1-0 in the final in TIkariot City, Tikariot. All four semi-finalists made their first appearance at that stage of the tournament, with two of them (Crpostran and Edsmontik) doing so within three cycles of their Baptism of Fire debut.

Qualification

Three of the four host countries qualified automatically, with Yuezhou required to qualify normally. A total of 144 teams entered the qualifying phase, vying for the 45 available places in the finals. Rank is as of beginning of qualifying.

Group stage

Draw

Teams were allocated to four pots on the basis of the KPB+ ranking system. The three automatically-qualified hosts were all placed into Pot 1 and assigned into scheduling position 1 of Groups A-C. Yuezhou were a Pot 1 team on merit, and were assigned into scheduling position 1 of Group D. The remaining 44 teams were drawn randomly from their pot into both a group and a scheduling position for the purposes of determining the match schedules in each group; the computerised draw procedure used at this tournament incorporated both of these steps at once by way of assigning each group a code containing each of the digits 1-4 inclusive in a randomised order, with digit n in this code being the scheduling position of the team in Pot n. (Groups A-D had this process adapted such that the first digit, representing the Pot 1 hosts in these groups, was always a 1.)

  • The knockout bracket was set using new a process referred to as Qusma seeding whereby paths through the knockout stage were set by group stage record with modifications to keep teams from the same group apart in the bracket for as long as is mathematically possible.
  • The roleplay bonus was calculated as a weighted average and multiplied by a fixed constant (10.93) throughout the tournament, rather than being applied on a cumulative basis as had become convention.
