Breton (Frankish: Breçanne) is the capital and largest city of the Kelssek republic of Haligonia, located on the northern end of the Sunrise Coast. A historic port city built around Breton Harbour, it is Kelssek's second-busiest seaport by cargo volume handled and home to the largest base of the Kelssek Navy. The southernmost Kelssek city with a population over a million and known for its relatively mild climate, the Breton region is a popular vacation and holiday destination within the country. Merriview Beach in the Oceanside district is a popular spot for Breton residents.
Emerald Point Citadel, a maritime fort constructed in 139 BFE, is the city's most well-known landmark and a Kelssek national historic site. It was built on top of an older harbour defence fortification estimated to have been originally built about one thousand years ago but abandoned around 560 BFE. The citadel continues the naval tradition of the One O'Clock Gun, firing a cannon every day one hour after noon to mark the time.
The city's largest industries are shipbuilding, transportation, tourism, higher education, and fisheries. The largest employers in Breton are the Government of Haligonia, Kelssek Ministry of Defence, Port of Breton, Ocean Pacific Lines, University of Haligonia, Maritime Life Insurance, and Bleen Inductive Logistics. Breton is the hub of Haligonia's healthcare system, with the University Hospital of Haligonia capable of the highest level of trauma and surgical care and an important centre for research and medical training.
Geography
The modern-day city is bisected by Breton Harbour into two main districts, Emeraldside and Shearwater. Old Breton, the citadel, and the central business district are on Emeraldside, while the naval base and industrial areas are in Shearwater. Historically, Breton and Shearwater were separate towns and they still retain distinct characters today. The Breton metropolitan area is the eighth-largest population centre in Kelssek, and includes the cities of Bedford, Sackville, and Coal Harbour.
Infrastructure
Breton is on the Great Pacific Highway, which connects it with Saint-Richard and Langlois to the north and continues south to Dartmoor. The city centre section is signed as National Route 3 to retain the highway's historical route but is non-limited access. This section can be bypassed by using Haligonia A403. The other major highway connection is the Haligonia M5 which is the freeway route to the inter-republic border with Beaulac, where it connects with Beaulac Autoroute 50 to Outineau.
Breton is served by Stanisland Airport (code: BRE), which is a secondary hub for both Air Kelssek and Kelssek Pacific Airlines and the main base of SCAS (formerly South Coast Air Services), a regional low-cost carrier.
Sports
Breton is represented in the first divisions of Kelssek's four major sports. Most notably, it is home to Shearwater FC, the first Kelssek club to win the IFCF Champions League.
