The 2022 DSAFF Comrades Cup, also known as 2022 Comrades Cup or simply Lannistter 2022, was the second edition of the Comrades Cup, the most important football tournament organized by the football federation of Delusia, DSAFF (Democratic Socialist Assembly Football Federation) for national teams. It took place from 15 July to 27 August 2022 in Lannistter.
Twenty-four teams took part in the tournament, making it the biggest one DSAFF has ever organized along with the 2021 Frost Cup. A total of fifty-two matches were played around the nation, in eight different locations. The event was originally scheduled to be hosted by Lannistter and Ardelark. The AFA (Ardelark Football Association), however, withdraw from DSAFF on June 13 2021 after the federation's decision of merging male and women's football teams. Lannistter thus agreed to become the only host country of the competition.
After succesfully hosting the first edition, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals, Talamia won the Comrades Cup by defeating the host nation Lannistter, that the year before placed third in the tournament. The final match ended 3-1 and it took place on August 27th, in the Köissär Adölf I Stadium in Arkhangelsk. The cup featured the famous semifinal match between Lannistter and Itini, ended 6-5 and that later became known as "The Battle of Stedwincher". In the third-place playoff, Itini won 2-0 against New Ordiel Kalibleland. The tournament, with 143 goals, set a new record for goals scored for a DSAFF competition.
The event featured a number of accolades. Julián Ekdal of Lannistter won both the Golden Boot and the Best Player Award, having scored 10 goals. Gábriel Rodrigo of Hortizo was voted best young player. The Best Goalkeeper award went to the second choice Talamian goalkeeper Polemiste Ntomenika, who replaced first choice Arees Zugon because of an injury. Kaireis Faidros of the winning team Talamia won the Best Coach Award.
History
In the course of 2021, the first year of the federation's life, DSAFF grew enormously, reaching over thirty football federations. The first edition of the Frost Cup organized in Kazanaty was a great success and saw the participation of 24 teams for the first time. Following the wave of success, DSAFF president Oiktirmon-Nicao Paidarion therefore proposed that the second edition of Comrades Cup would involve 32 teams.
Furthermore, for the first time, access to the competition was no longer regulated solely on invitations but also on a qualification path. The first Comrades Cup qualifiers were held by the COTEFU sub-federation, and saw the victory of Kazanaty and Inglaland. The national team of Gondwana was thus incredibly excluded from the most important competition of DSAFF. Gondwana had won the Frost Cup and at the time of the start of the 2022 Comrades Cup was the COTEFU team with the best position in the MexiCola Ranking.
Fourteen teams out of twenty-four made their debut in a Comrades Cup edition: Antarcticis, Cresr, Fushcor, Hortizo, Inglaland, Kanoshu, Kazanaty, Leouschburgh, Levonen, Macbon, Osreton, Nordustra, Saralonia and Tertania. Five teams, on the other hand, made their absolute debut in a DSAFF competition: Antarcticis, Cresr, Inglaland, Levonen and Macbon.
Following the decision to leave the federation, the reigning champions of Ardelark did not participate in the tournament. Therefore it was known from the beginning that a new champion was going to be crowned.
Host nation
On August 11, 2021, the DSAFF Congress voted to decree the host country of the second edition of the Comrades Cup. Two federations had submitted their candidacy: the Federal United States of Mexico, and the first joint candidacy of Ardelark and Lannistter. The so-called "LanArk" proposal won with nine to four votes. So the next day the Congress decision was made official. However, on June 13, 2022, after the end of the 2022 Rose Cup, Congress met again to deliberate the removal of gender barriers and the consequent merger of male and female federations. Following the decision, the AFA (Ardelark Football Association) decided to leave DSAFF. Given the imminent start of the tournament and found that the work had already been completed, DSAFF decided to reschedule its ambitions. The tournament would be extended from 32 to 24 teams and Lannistter would be the only host nation.
It was thus decided that all matches would be played in Lannistter, and that the competition would be informally called "Lannistter 2022" and no longer "LanArk 2022".
However, the Congress decided to maintain the contributions made up to that moment by the AFA and by Werka, among the sponsors of the competition and responsible for its logo. On June 14, the official emblem of the competition was thus revealed, different from the one presented by Werka in the bid for co-hosting. This kept within it only references to Lannish colors and culture.
